The possession illusion is killing V.League's identity

A familiar scene plays out every week in the V.League: a team in red keeps 68 percent possession, passing sideways in front of the box like a training exercise. In the 82nd minute, the opponent steals the ball, moves it forward in three passes, and scores. The commentator says: "The losing team controlled the game completely." I turned off the volume and laughed. For over a decade of following Vietnamese football, I have never seen a statistic more abused than possession. Clubs chase Pep Guardiola's model without realizing that Pep's midfielders can operate in tight spaces at high speed. V.League defenders, meanwhile, receive the ball from the goalkeeper, look around, and roll it sideways to the full-back. The full-back sees the striker isolated against a 1m88 central defender and passes backward. The cycle repeats for 90 minutes. This is not possession. This is fear disguised as tactics. Teams hide behind the percentage when they lose. The media lets them get away with it. Expected goals (xG) – the standard tool for measuring chance quality in Europe – is almost invisible in Vietnamese football analysis. Why? Because xG would expose possession-heavy teams as harmless. A team with 70 percent possession and 0.3 xG is not dominating; it is wasting everyone's time. The solution is not to abandon possession. It is to abandon the delusion that possession equals quality. Vietnamese football needs to measure what matters: shots on target, penetrative passes, entries into the opponent's box, real transitions. When coaches stop using possession as a shield, they will be forced to build teams that actually score. I predict that within two seasons, the first V.League club willing to say "we don't need possession" and build a disciplined counter-attacking system will finish in the top three. Atletico Madrid and Leicester City have proven that history remembers champions, not teams that pass sideways. Vietnamese football needs champions. The fans deserve to feel the ball rolling into the net – not just watch it roll in circles.
